PART NINE/ (DUE WEDNESDAY THE 14TH)
PICK TWO TO ANSWER:

1). Why do you think Leisel’s nightmares finally left her?

2). What happens with Frau Holtzaphel during the air raid? Why do you think she acted this way? What do you think about her son’s reaction? Was it wrong for him to want to save himself?

3). Describe Michael Holtaphel’s experience in Stalingrad with him and his brother. How does this story affect your opinion of war?

4). Why do you think that Rudy placed the teddy bear on the dying Pilot’s shoulder?

PART TEN/ (DUE SATURDAY THE 17TH)
PICK TWO TO ANSWER:

1). Why did Michael Holtzaphel kill himself? Do you think if some things had been different, he would have made a different decision? What things would have needed to change in order for Michael to heal inside?

2). Give your reaction to the last bombing in Molching? How did this part of the story affect you? What about this scene in the story impacted you the most?

3). React to Leisel spotting Max in the death march. What do you think would have happened if Rudy had not been there to stop her? What do you think Leisel must have been feeling inside? How is Leisel’s reaction similar to Hans and the first death march?

4). In the end if this story, Leisel has lived a full life, she’s reunited with Max who’s survived, but she has suffered great loss in her life. What do you think is a “moral” of this story? What could one of the story’s themes be?

5). Did you like this story? What about it did you like? What didn’t you like? Does this story change the way you think/feel about people, history, the world, ect? Explain.

Question 1. ) I believe that Liesel's nightmares have finally ended due to over coming her brothers death. After 7 years of the dreams repeating, seeing the same things over and over again, her brain has finally overcome this terrifying event. She has gotten over her past and moved on to the conflicts she is facing with currently.
Question 4. ) Rudy placed the teddy bear on the pilots shoulder as a gift of sympathy. Rudy acknowledged the man was still alive and his death was near. So he wanted to reach out to the man in his last moments and give him a gift of kindness so in the last moments of his life he might feel happiness.

  2. Part 9 Question 2: During the air raid Frau Holzaphel didn’t want to leave her house. She wanted to die because she was very depressed about her son who died a couple days after one of his legs was blown off in a military hospital. She was sad and didn’t see a point in living anymore. Her other son tried to get her to leave and go to safety from the air raid but she wouldn’t go. Finally he left and went without her to save his life. I think that this wasn’t wrong of him to want to save himself because it was his life and he couldn’t do anything else to get her to leave. He went to the basement and finally Frau Holzaphel came too.

  3. Part 9(Question 2): During the air raid Frau Holtzaphel had a problem with coming. She was suicidal because of what happened to her son. Her son was killed after his leg was blown off; this made her very sad and depressed and she thought it wasn’t worth living anymore. Her son tried to get her to leave during the air raid so she would be safe. He left and went home to safe himself. I don’t think it was wrong of him because he had tried very hard to get her to leave and she didn’t. Therefore he did the thing he should have.

  4. Part 9 Question 3: Michael Holtaphel’s experience in war in Stalingrad with his brother was horrible. His brother got his leg blown off and he was sent to a military hospital and died there three days later. This makes me hate war because so many people die in it and get hurt for unnecessary reasons. If there wasn’t war then the world would be a much better place. Sometimes war is necessary though. Like during the Holocaust someone had to stop the Nazis from advancing and from Hitler taking over the world because then so many people would be sent to death and concentration camps.

Question 2. ) I found the last bombing in the book to be quite surprising. It makes me think how easily something can be taken away from you. In the blink of an eye everything is gone. It makes me glad that our country is safe from the violence of war. But it also upsets me that people today are losing everything this exact instant because of war. Just like Liesel. It really is surprising.
Question 4. ) I believe that a few of the morals of this story is that death will always live forever. Death is every single humans number one conflict. And that death will continue to destroy lives. If life ceases to exist, death in itself will always remain. ( quite a redundant and gloomy topic i'm afraid. ) A theme could be to use words carefully for they have the power to destroy lives

  7. I think that Liesel's nightmares finally left her because she had learned to deal with them and she can face her bad dreams and fears and shrug them off as if they never existed. Liesel has been having nightmares for a long while so she must be accustomed to them and she must have expected to have the same nightmare. To expect something like that one must have been really sick and tired of going through the same exact thing over and over so expecting a nightmare that has been happening over and over must not be so frightening to her anymore.

  8. I think that Rudy put the teddy bear on the pilot's shoulder because of many reasons. For one thing I believe that Rudy felt sympathetic for the pilot that was about to die. Another reason I believe is because Rudy felt so bad for the pilot because Rudy would be alive and well, while the pilot would die right in front of his eyes. Also Rudy could have felt that way another time because he might have known someone that had the same fate as the pilot. One's life would be taken so that another could live is my theory about this.

  9. I think rudy rested the teddy bear on the dying pilots shoulder because i think he felt sympathetic for the pilot and would want the pilot to die with him so the pilot felt as if he was not alone and i don't think any normal human would want one another to die alone and cold

  10. i think liesiels nightmare left her because she finally realized it will not help mourning over it and that she has finally came to peace about the death of her brother and she is older and can understand death eaiser

  11. part nine question 4). Why do you think that Rudy placed the teddy bear on the dying Pilot’s shoulder? i think that she did this because she wanted the piolet to feal good and know he did a good dead. also she didnt want the piolt to die in pain without knowing that someone was there and cared for him and knew that he was dieing also i think that rudy didnt believ in people dieing in pain so that is why i think that rudy placed the teddy bear on the dieing piolets shoulder. also rudy was nice to people and fealt bad for him.

  12. Part 9 question 4: I think that Rudy gave the pilot dieing the teddy bear because he didn’t think that the man even if he was an enemy pilot should not die in the woods knowing that no one near him cared about him. I also think that Rudy was so shocked by the mess that the plane had made he wasn’t thinking right. Lastly Rudy might have been thinking if he were still in the Hitler youth that dieing man might have been him and if that were him he would have liked some one to do that for him.

  13. Part nine question 2
Liesels nightmares finally left her because she finally got completly comfortable with living in her foster home. She always had nightmares of when she saw her brother die right in front of her and she always had bed wettings i mean like every night. She stopped because every night Hans comforted her and she just got getting more and more comfortable everynight until her nightmares where finally all gone. So everynight hans literally just waited and waited by her bed until she had the nightmare and then she comforted her.Liesel was conforted then she went back to her bed only to wake up and go back to bed by yeyt another night mare until now.

  14. Part 9 question 4
I think Rudy placed the teddy bear on the dying pilots shoulder because he felt bad for him. I think he thought that the pilot shouldnt die in the woods like that all by himself feeling unnapreciated, and feeling like no one cared about him. Rudy wouldnt have wanted to die like that, so im sure he thought the pilot felt the same way and just wanted so show some affection or care for him.

  16. part nine question 2). What happens with Frau Holtzaphel during the air raid? she dosent want to go to the shelter i think she acted this whay becus she was diprest and didnt want to die and also one of he sons died i think she fealt scared for her son and that he was reacting un imanginable because she thought it was odd for him to want to save himself because of all the horible things that wher going on and that is not a bad thing that he wanted to save himself becuse he still beleves that they can survive.

  17. Part 9 question 1
I believe that liesel's nightmares left her because I think that usually when you have a reoccuring nightmare, your conciosness is trying to tell you some thing is wrong, and you need to figure out what and fix it. So liesel obviosley fixed it, and the thing that was bugging her in the back of her mind was put at ease, and her nightmares left her.

I BELIEVE THAT IT WAS NOT WRONG TO TRY TO SAVE HIM SELF BECAUSE HE THOUGHT THAT HE COULD SURVIVE THIS HOLOCAUST. hE WANTED TO DO WAT WAS RIGHT.sO HE THOUGHT WAT WAS RIGHT THAT HE HAD TO TRY TO SAVE HIMSELF SO HE DID AND SUFFERED THE COSEQUENCES.

  19. Part 9 question 1: I think that Liesel’s nightmares finally left her because when you have night mares over and over again about the same think they get less and less scary. I believe this because this used to happen to me as a younger kid. This is why I think that Liesel’s nightmares finally went away. Since they went away I think that she will ether be happier or have different nightmares about past experiences.

  20. Part9 question1
I think that Leisals nightmares finally left her because when she watched her brother die on the floor of the train that was the image that caused all of the nightmares, and that thought never left her mind of seeing her own brother die right in front of her so she kept having the bad dreams. When she was watching to the molching she was thinking about how she was going to be 14 in a couple of weeks but her brother would be 6 forever. She felt sad about that but that is when that she finally realized that everything was all right and she had to stop worrying because life goes on so the thoughts about her brother finally left.

  21. Part 9 question 4
Weeks after the accident occurred Rudy went through the toolbox that was left. He stored many of the things inside of it because they may have been useful to the next air raid. He got down to the bottom of the box and the only thing left was a teddy bear. A couple of weeks later he went to the hospital and he had the toolbox in his hand and he went and put bear that he had found in the toolbox on the pilots shoulder. I think that he did this because the teddy bear looked like a personal thing that the pilot had in his toolbox so he would probably want it to have as something important while he was getting ready to die.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Part 9:Question 4:
I think that Rudy put his teddy bear on dying pilot in the plane that had just crashed because he felt strong enough to give it to someone else who needed it more. The pilot was probably feeling alone and scared at this point. I think that getting attention and getting things before the pilot dies is comforting for him. It makes him not feel alone at the moment. I think that the people on the plane were supposed to be Americans. Rudy was against Hitler and the Nazis so i guess you can say he was on the American side. He knew what Hitler and the Nazis did was wrong. He also knew that the Americans came to help.

  23. part nine:question 4
Rudy placed the Bear on the pilots shoulder because... Before they found the plane he had a toolbox and the bear. He described the bear as just something that he had forever, but he just somehow still held onto it. I think we him and Leisel and his friends found the plane and saw the struggling pilot and he just had a moment that he felt like he needed to do something. I think that he just saw the bear in his hand and decided that maybe if he gave it to him then it would just make things better. Maybe keep the pilots hopes and, and just a symbol of someones out there caring for you so keep holding on. I think Rudy did the right thing of handing him the bear. It was just a key of happiness and, you never know that couldve changed the pilots whole mood of hope.

  24. part nine:question 3
The story of Micheals brother dying had just supported my thought of the war. From the begginging of learning about it I thought it was just a completley ridicolous point of even having a war. Seeing Micheal's brother die in it, just made me think of all of the other people who had relatives that were killed in the war. There had to be tons of them! I could see that Michael was struggling with this image of him watching his brother get killed, and him going up to Rosa to tell her the news. He was completley shocked out of the thought that this actually happened. I dont think anyone could be able to actually believe this. So again this is another reason I dont think the war was a good idea at all because it was just a way of people losing their loved ones.

  25. Part 9

Q2) I think that Frau Holtzaphel wanted to stay in the house because she didn't feel like living anymore. Everybody tried to get her to go to the bomb shelter but she wouldn't listen. She just stayed in her house. The main reason she did it was because she had lost one hof her sons because of the war. Her other son finally left her and went to the bomb shelter. It wasn't wrong for him to do because he needed to save himself. He had done everything in his power to get his mother to come with him.

Q4) In the story Rudy comes up to a crashed plane with the pilot in it holding on to life by a thread. He had a teddy bear with him and he put it on the pilot's shoulder. I think he did this because he wanted the pilot to know that he was good and that the pilot wouldn't die completely alone. It was all Rudy could do and it was his way of showing his sorrow since they spoke two differant languages.

  26. 3). Michael’s brother Robert had his feet blown off from an explosion in Russia. After 3 days of being in pain from his wound he had still not had his soul taken. But while Michael was watching him in a medical tent his time came and as Michael talked to his brother Death took his soul. This doesn’t change my view on war because I have seen and heard things about war that were much, much worse and most of it is true. So I know the gory-ness of war and this didn’t change my view on it.
4). In the beginning of the chapter he explains to Liesel that the Teddy bear is so that if a little kid comes into the room while he is stealing stuff he will give it to them to quiet and calm them down. I believe that Rudy puts the Teddy bear on the pilot to comfort and calm him down like the original use for it.

  27. Part 9 Question 2:
During the air raid, Frau Holtzaphel refuses to leave her house and go to the shelter. I think she did this because her son had just died and she was crushed. She didn’t have much desire to live because she lost someone so important, but in the end she changed her mind and went to the shelter. I thought her son’s reaction was normal. He didn’t want his mom to die, so he tried to get her out of the house, but when he couldn’t he realized he needed to save himself. I don’t think it was wrong for him to want to save himself, either. It was just his natural instincts.

  28. Part 9 Question 4:
I think Rudy placed the teddy bear on the pilot’s shoulder to comfort him. He knew the pilot was dying and probably in a lot of pain, and he wanted to help him relax before he died. Rudy said earlier that he would give the teddy bear to a child to calm them down. I think he wanted to do the same thing to the pilot and just calm him before he passed away. He was kind of helping to ease the pain. If I were the pilot, I would have been a little more comforted with the teddy bear, even though I would know what was about to happen to me.

  29. Part 9, question2:
Frau Holtzapfel was so distraught about her son that she thought she wanted to die. It was not wrong for Michael to save himself, he decided that although, yes, he would be in great pain if she did die, that was her decision to make, not his. In the end, though, she decided that she still had another son and she wanted to be there for him.

  30. Part9, question4:
Rudy placed the teddy bear on the pilot's shoulder because although he was raised to hate Americans, he understood the need for even the tiniest bit of comfort. When he saw that the pilot was about to die anyway, he decided that anyone's last thoughts or feelings should be at least slightly happy.

  31. Part 9: Question 2: Frau Holtzapel sat in the kitchen at her house during an air raid. I think she acted this way because she didn’t care at that point if she died or not. She was probably still in shock that one of her sons died, so if she died then she would be with her son. Michael, her last living son was trying to get her out of the house, but nothing worked. He wanted to stay with her but instead he saved himself, probably because he felt that it was his mother’s decision if she wanted to die or not. I don’t think it was wrong for Michael to save himself because he was doing it for his own good and he knew his mother would have wanted him to live rather than having another dead son.

    ReplyDelete
  32. Part 9: Question 4: I think Rudy placed the bear on the dying pilots shoulder because he felt sorry that he was dying and wanted to show him that he cared. The bear probably showed the pilot a last sign of love before he died and Rudy wanted to tell him how he felt about the situation. Even though the pilot was American, Rudy hated Hitler and knew somewhat of the things happening in the war, so he knew that what the pilot was going through was what many other people were experiencing as well. Rudy knew that times were getting harder and harder and he didn’t want to contribute to that. So, he showed a sign of kindness.

  34. Part9: Question 2-
Frau stays at home while her son left her for safety. I think that it was ok for him to leave her. Even though she is going through extremely tough times, she shouldnt have to put her son in danger because of her actions. Her son had all the right to get to safety. I think that it was normal for him to react the way he did though. He felt guilty for leaving his mother behind. He felt responsible because he was the only person left with her. Anyone I think would feel guilty. But his reaction was instinct and in my opinion, it was right to leave her.

  35. I believe Liesels nightmares finally left her because she became comfortable with her new life with Han’s and Rosa. Also I think that she realized that nothing will ever change that moment in her life so she should try to forget it and get over it. I think she became comfortable with her new family because she knew she loved them and she knew they loved her so the pain of that memory hopefully left her. Another reason I think she doesn’t have the nightmares any more is because she meet matt and tried to replace him with her real brother so her pain would hopefully ease her from losing her real brother.

  36. Part 9: Question 4- Rudy's first idea of using the teddy bear was to give it to a kid if he/she got scared. When the pilot crashed, Rudy did the only thing he could-give him the teddy bear. Im sure he thought that this would help take some of the horror away. When the pilot had it on his shoulder he said, "thank you," and passed away. I think that Rudy achieved that goal.

  37. Part 9 Question 2: During the air raid, Frau Holtzapfel refuses to get out of her house and move to the shelter. She acted this way because she was still in shock and very depressed about her son being killed in Stalingrad. Her other son, Michael, finally decided to let her be and he ran to the shelter without her. I don’t think it was wrong of Michael to want to save himself because even though he was in despair because of his brother’s death, he still wanted to live. In the story he even says, “Why do I want to live? I shouldn’t want to, but I do.” Michael is just another innocent human who wants to keep on living, even though he feels guilty because his brother isn’t anymore.

    Question 2
During the air raid Frau Holtzaphel stays at her house at the kitchen table. Everyone tried to get her to come, but she just stayed there so they left and went to the shelter, leaving her there. I think that she acted this way because of one of her son’s death; she felt that her dying too would make it better. She then realized that she still has a son living and that by leaving him would just make him sad too, so she then joined them in the shelter. Her sons reaction was when his mother did not come he left her there and went to the shelter. While in the shelter he keeps saying that he should have stayed with her, but he didn’t. I don’t think it was wrong for him to save himself because he tried to get her to come, and she didn’t want too. If she was positive that she wanted to be safe she would have left with them right away, yet she waits until she realizes that she is making the wrong choice. I think that her son did do the right thing.

    Part 9
    Question 4
I think that Rudy placed the teddy bear on the dying Pilot’s shoulder, to show that someone was really thinking and cared about him. Rudy found the plane and saw that someone was still in it barely alive, and instead of just leaving him there he tries to comfort him. He gives him the teddy bear to show that even though he knew he was going to die that someone cared enough about him to give him something. Rudy was letting him know that what he did was good and that because he was dying, it was okay, Rudy tried to make the pilot keel good before he died.

    Question 1:
I think that Leisel's nightmares finally left her because over time, she has learned to handle this kind of stuff because it is happening in everyday life in the Holocaust, and she has Max to talk this over with. She has learned that other people have gone through this, and even lost their whole family so she is just happy that she still has her father Hans. Also, it could be just a psychological change because if she got her mind off of it before she goes to sleep, she won't have the same nightmare. This is just what I think.

    Question 2:
What happens to Frau during the air raid is she refuses to leave her home. She acted this way because I think that since one of her son's have already died, she is depressed about it and the air raid is giving her flash backs. I think her son's reaction was the right thing to do, but she didn't listen to him. Her son, Michael, was telling her that she has to leave the house and head down to the basement, but she refuses to listen. It was not wrong for him wanting to save himself because if he were to die, who knows what would happen to Frau or what she would do.

  41. Part 9: Question 1: The nightmares that Liesel was having were the memory of her brother dying on the train. In the text it states, "It was with great sadness that she realized that her brother would be six forever, but when she held that thought, she also made an effort to smile." I think in this quote Liesel thought where ever her brother is, he would be happy. Or maybe she was thinking, wherever he is, he will always remain the cute 6 year old i remember him to be. I don't know, but she managed to get a happy thought in her head to make her stop having this nightmare.

  42. Question 1: I believe that Leisel’s nightmares finally left her because as she has grown older it is easier for her to except her brother’s death. Also, as the war and terrible things continue she realizes that many people have lost and will lose loved ones. Compared to the other things going on in Leisel’s life her brothers death was not the most terrifying. Also, when she returns the plate to Ilsa she says she see’s her brother, his knee healed and him smiling, this meaning that she can be happy now because she knows that her brother is content and happy with the way things are. It was hard for her to move on seeing her brother sad and hurt, thus most likely being the main reason for her nightmares.

    ReplyDelete
  43. Question 2: During the air raid Frau Holtzaphel’s son becomes worried and does not know what to do when his mother refuses to move as the sirens signaling an air raid go off. As Rosa and Leisel become worried they try to convince her to retreat to safety, but they are not successful. I believe she acted this way because she was so alarmed by all the events happening around he she was unable to move. I also believe she did this because she believed that her son did not deserve to die but she should. I believe that because her son left her there it saved her life. If her son stayed with her they both would have died, in the kitchen, together and alone. After her last son alive didn’t stay with her she realized that she has one more thing in her life to live for and she wants to go with him. She doesn’t want to die with one son remaining. It was not wrong for him to save himself, after what he fought for to stay alive he deserved to save himself.

  44. Part nine:
    Question four:
I believe that Rudy placed the teddy bear on the dying pilot's shoulder because no human on earth had a heart like his. In the book, Rudy said, "my own is a circle, and I have the endless ability to be in the right place at the right time." He also said there is one downfall to this. He gets to see people at their best and worst but this is not always a good thing. This is true because he can see their beauty side and their ugly side. Rudy sometimes wonders how that one same person can be both.

    Question three:
Micheal Holtaphels expierience is very heart warming and touching. He kept telling himself that he should have stayed, he should have sayed. The thing is he didn't have to stay with his mother Frau. She waited in the kitchen while the others ran off. He regreted taking off so he went back to his momma. He told her he should have stayed. She couldn't hear him. She was too concerned about the other kids. This story affects my opinion on war because it shows me how hard it is to let go of something or someone you love.

    Question #1:
I think that Liesel’s nightmares finally stopped occurring because she faced her brother’s death and realized that she had to move on and overcome these dreams. She realized that she must focus on the present and not something that happened 7 years before. I think that Liesel will always have him in her heart but she finally figured out a way to put it to the side and put this horrible loss behind her. I think, when doing this, it made her a stronger person and it caused her brain to stop thinking about it so much and just move past it but always remember him.

Her son tried to get her to leave during the air raid so she would be safe. He left and went home to safe himself. She has learned that other people have gone through this, and even lost their whole family so she is just happy that she still has her father Hans. Also, it could be just a psychological change because if she got her mind off of it before she goes to sleep, she won't have the same nightmare. This is just what I think.

  55. part 10:question1
Micheal killed himself for wanting to live. It says this in the book. Micheal explains "there was nothing I could do" but I think if things chnged then he wouldv'e thought different. I think in a lot of situastions that if you thought differently about things or if things changed. then people could make other decisions about stuff like that. If they maybe talked to a friend or a family memeber about what was bothering them then they could get help and advice. I believe Micheal could've maybe changed his self confidence, I think a lot of times he just brogught himself down a lot and that could also be part of the reason why he killed himself.

addition to question 1.....I think Micheal just felt very guilty about leaving his mother in addition to not blelieving himself. He decided to leave her, but then realizd he made the wrong decision and went back. His mother treated him like he was invisble.

  57. part 10:question2
The bombing of Molching shocked me. I just couldn't take it in, that it was really happening. I think it affected me just because I can't picture being me in that situastion. Knowing that my town had just been bombed and that it was basically ruined to pieces, I couldn't handle that. I admire Leisel so incridebly much for how strong she is. She had been through so much and I don't know how she does it. I think the scene that effected me so much was when she found Rudy. She was just screaming, " I love you, Dont you know I love you" over and over and she was devestated that he was gone. I thought that, that was really very sad.

  59. Part10 question 5: I liked the story over al. I thought that the beginning started off bit slow but that was the only part that I disliked. I thought that the end of the story was sad except when Leisel is reunited with Max. I think that this book shows the true harshness of the Germans to the Jew and that most people should read it. I also think that all kids my age in 8th grade should know that the world isn’t perfect and this book shows that a lot in it. This story kind of changes the way about history because I never thought man could be so harsh another man

  60. Part 10 question 3: Leisel spotting Max in the death march most have been so devastating of her. I mean just think they were like best friends and there is a small chance he will not die from the march. If Rudy had not have been there to stop her I think she might have gotten beat or maybe even killed if she ran out there after him. I don’t know how bad she must have felt think that he would most likely die on the march. This is what I though about the death march.

  61. I believe the moral of the story was to never take your life for granted. I believe this is the moral because the Jews got their world turned up side down because of Hitler wanting to make a perfect race. I think that this moral could also be the theme because I believe the author wanted the whole book to be based around that. I think that not judging a book by their cover is also a good theme for this book because Hitler wanted to make a perfect race by exterminating that weren't Nazi's by starting with the Jews.

    ReplyDelete
  62. I liked this book in many ways by following Liesels life and her difficult obstacles. I didn't like all of the violent things that happened along the book. But some of the bad things made me realize how lucky my life is and how I shouldn't take it for granted from seeing what the Jews went through. Reading this book also made me realize how cruel the world could be and I never knew things like that could happen, ever. For example what Hitler did by putting people in death camps and concentration camps I didn't know that people could be that cruel. In conclusion this makes me think that my life is good compared to some people in this world and next time I say my life is hard I should think about them.

  64. Part 10 Question
Michael Holtzaphel killed himself because he felt horrible knowing that he wanted to live while his brother lied in a grave. He left a note telling his mother this and apologizing to her about it. War would have to change if he wouldnt have killed himself, because his brother died in war. Also, he would have had to get therapy because it wasnt his fault at all that his brother died and he didnt have to punish himself for being alive while his brother wasnt.

  65. Part 10 Question 5
I loved this story, and I think it made as big of an impact on me because when they make characters for the time in history, it kind of brings you closer to that event. Any time something bad happened in the book to one of the characters, it teaches you something, because the author tries to bring you close to those characters. Plus, after getting to read a book that I can comprehend on my own instead of someone telling you about this event, I kind of understand the horrible impact on the world this event made.

Q3)I think that when Leisel saw Max she ignored everything that her mind was telling her to do. She hadn't seen Max in a long time and her emotions got the best of her. If Rudy hadn't havestopped her and if she would've continued to go to Max it is very likely that Max would've been killed and maybe Leisel too. Leisel probably had a lot going through her mind but she knew that she wanted to be with Max so that is what she did. It is a lot like what Hans did. They both did something most people wouldn't have done but they did it because they knew it was right.

Q5) I really liked this story. I really liked how it kept yoyu guessing and how the narrator was death. I really liked the relationship between Rudy and Leisel and i thought that some of the stuff they did was very brave. This book was suspensful and one of the best books I've ever read. The only part that I didnt like was all of the death because it made me sad. This changes the way I look at Hitler because this book and the unit has shown me all the horrible things he did and how terrible of a peron he is. Also i have sympathy for all the people who suffered durring the holocaust.

  67. Part 10: Question 1: Michael Holtzaphel killed himself because he wanted to be with his brother, up in heaven. He was there when his brother was dying and there when he died. Also, his hand was hurt, the war was still going on plus he couldn’t go out into war. His mother was a mess and a part of her wanted to die too. So many terrible things were going on and he couldn’t take it any longer, and he missed his brother; killing himself was the only way to be with him. If his brother were still living, it would make a huge difference to Michael’s decisions. What would also have to change to make him heal on the inside is the war going on. Nobody at that time could make the war stop, unless it was Hitler.

    ReplyDelete
  68. Part 10: Question 5: I liked the story but I didn’t like the ending. The beginning and middle were good. But part ten wasn’t. The ending was sad. All of Leisel’s loved ones died and her best friend died. The story ended with dead people, a bombing and funerals and I didn’t like that. Also I think that Rudy should have had the chance to kiss Leisel before he died. That was very sad. Leisel loved her papa very much and then he died, so it doesn’t really make me feel happy. This story did change the way I viewed Holocaust history because now I know not all German’s loved Hitler, and I can see that at that time in history many people were in a depression and needed help. The Hubermann’s were a good example on how a German family should have been in the Holocaust.

    Question one
I believe that Liesel's nightmares finally ended because she got over her brothers death. After seven years of her nightmares she had and seeing the same thing over and over again, she has finally overcome this terrifying fate. She has gotten over what has happened in the past and moved on to the problems she is facing with right now. Its not good to dwell on the past but worry about whats happening now.

    Question four
I think that Rudy put the teddy bear on the pilot's shoulder because Rudy felt sympathetic for the pilot that was about to die. Another reason is that I believe Rudy felt so bad for the pilot because Rudy would be alive and well, while the pilot would die. Also Rudy could have felt the same way another time because he might have known someone that had met the same fate as the pilot had. Somone’s life would be taken so that another could live is how things are.

  72. part 10 Michael Holtaphel’s experience in war in Stalingrad with his brother was horrible.

  74. Part10 question
In the last part of the book of the book I found the book burning to be something that was pretty unexpected. It was something that would make a reader think about what you have that can be taken away with out knowing it was going to happen. It seemed like just in a heartbeat everyone was gone. It makes me glad that our country is safe from the violence of war. But it also upsets me that people today are losing everything this exact instant because of war. This is just like the thing that Leisal had to go through in the last part of this book.

  75. Part 10 question 4
I think that in this story that the moral that comes out to the reader is that death will never go away and it is something that we will all have to experience and learn to live with because it takes an effect on all of us. In life death is something that we all have to look forward to and there is no escaping it. It seems that no matter how much it escapes your mind it will always come back to you at some point and cause a problem. If life ceases to exist, death in itself will always remain. A theme could be to use words carefully for they have the power to destroy lives and things will all come back to you at some point.

    Question 4:
The moral of this story could be 'be grateful for what you have' because even though Leisel lost her mother in her life, she still has Max, which she has cared for for a while. Also, she has her father and friends that she used to read to. If you think about it, without Max in her life, she would be no one. She should be grateful that she had Max in her life. The moral of the story could also be 'keep your head up' because even though she lost her mother, there are other people in her life that she cares about and could help her get over the fact that her mother is no longer there with her.

    Question 5:
I did like this story. I liked it because it changed the way I viewed people, and people being treated like they were in the Holocaust... discriminated. What I didn't like was that the book [format] was in times confusing because of the text structure. In the book that I didn't like was the way people were being treated. People of any race or ethnicity should never be treated this way. But somehow Hitler pulled it off. He made it so that over a period of time he had control over people. He was discriminating against Jews, and pretty much anyone who was not 'aryan'. This deffinately changed the way I view people being treated badly, and the History of the Holocaust. It gave me the feeling of just straight out cruelty. Beyond cruelty. What Hitler did was not humane. 6 million people died in the Holocaust because of just 1 man!! Just the thought that one man could be able to have the power to eliminate a population of 6 million people because of his "hatred" towards them is just mind-blowing. Overall, I liked the book, but not the event.

  80. Question 2: I was horrified by the last bombing in Molching. I felt bad for Leisel and all that she has been through. Leisel has lost so many people but is still able to move on in life, unlike Michael. This part of the story made me worried to hear the rest of the story. I was scared that Leisel would be left alone or put through agony and pain. I was very happy to find out she ended up living with Ilsa until she found Alex Steiner. The part that impacted me the most was when she pictured her Rosa with the accordion and then Hans playing the accordion. The explanation of her reaction to Hans’s death had a strong impact on me as well. I am unsure of how Leisel handle all the death she faced so well.

  82. Question 5: I really really enjoyed this book. It was a major page turner. I was anxious to keep reading and never wanted to put it down! It was filled with many different emotions! At parts I was almost crying but at other parts I was filled with joy. I liked the point of view the story came from it gave good insight. The only thing I didn’t like was how little of Max’s life in the camp they showed. I wish they would have said what happened to Max at the times he wasn’t living in the basement. I also didn’t like how Leisel and Rudy didn’t kiss while Rudy was still alive. This story defiantly gives me a different view on people and life and how hard losing love ones can be. It also showed me the things people have to go through whether or not its death among themselves or someone else. This story showed me how important the remembrance of the holocaust is and how terrible it was not only for the Jews but the Germans too. It was very realistic.

This particular part in the story did have an affect on me, but I could never fully understand what Liesel went through unless it happened to me (I pray that it won't). The feeling that you're the only one left, all of your friends, your parents, people you have made so many memories with, even your enemies, are dead, that's got to be awful. To know that people you have for most of your life, are there one minute, and in 30 seconds, they're gone, that must make you feel as if you are all alone in the world, and what could be worse than loneliness?

  90. Part 10: question5:
I LOVED this story, I know a lot of people "hate" it, but they are wrong, they may dislike it because they don't get it, but once they understand it, they won't hate it anymore. I totally understand this book and enjoy it very much. I love the descriptions and visuals Death gives us. I enjoyed this book as much as I enjoyed the diary of Anne Frank. I am fascinated with the Holocaust, not like "I want to learn more about it so I can be a Neo Nazi" or anything like that, NO, DEFINITELY NOT!!! I'm more interested in the "psychology" standpoint of it, like "Why would someone do this?" and "how could someone be so ruthless and cruel just because some people are different?". Please don't say "because they're sick" "because they're crazy". I want to go deeper than that. What interests me most about the holocaust, is how people are like blind cows!!! Someone says "Jews are bad, French are bad, Blacks are bad, Communists are bad, Union traders are bad, kill them" and people listen to one, mentally damaged man, and they follow him and believe him, and don't see the wrongness of it all, just like blind cows.

  91. 1). Michael killed himself because he wanted to live. If his brother had not died in war Michael would have not felt guilty about living but since his brother did die he felt guilty for wanting to live when his brother didn’t get to. So in order for him not to kill himself his brother would have had to live.
3). When Leisel saw Max she probably did the worst thing she could have done which was run out and find him. She clung to his arm talking to him and when the Nazi guard told her to get away she ignored him and then he thew her on the side of the road. With all Leisel’s feelings and being so scared she ran out again and found Max. the guard then pushed Max to the ground and whipped Leisel. If Rudy had not been there to yell at her and get her out of the street she would have probably been hurt even more and to a much more serious extent. This was like what Hans did because their feelings took control and over took there judgement and got them into some bad trouble.

  92. Part 10: Question 2
My reaction to the last bombing was not shocking because in warfare people will do desperate things to achieve victory and to give out total destruction to the enemy they are fighting. Such as 9/11 when the twin towers collapsed. The terrorist wanted to shock the United States by doing this. But instead all they have achieved was to infuriate the citizens of America and her people

    Part 10 :Question 5
No I didn't like this story very much because it was very hard to follow considering the fact that the narrator wasn't a human but it was Death. I liked that it gave a little bit of a twist for readers and had given some confusion to readers by the narrator not being a person in the story and the narrator to be Death. I didn't like that it was broken up in parts because I am so accustomed to just chapters and not broken parts. This story does change the way I feel because even though Hitler had failed in his mission it was actually genius.

  93. Part 9 Question 2: During the air raid Frau Holtzaphel refused to go to the bomb shelter. I believe she did this because she was so depressed about one of her sons dying that she didn’t want to live anymore either. Her son Michael was disappointed in himself. He wanted to live so bad that he just left his mother to die. He hated that she was so willing and ready to die and he wasn’t. He felt like he was selfish. I don’t think it was wrong for him to save himself because it’s just human nature to want to survive. If any other person were in his situation they would probably do the same thing. It wasn’t the right thing to do but I know that most other people would do the same thing.

  94. Part 9 Question 4: I think Rudy put the teddy bear on the dying pilot’s shoulder because he thought no one should die alone. The teddy bear helped to comfort the man and show him that some one was there. Rudy was thinking about his own father who was fighting in the war. He knew that his own father didn’t have a choice to fight or not and the same situation may apply to the dying pilot. He couldn’t hold the fact that he was American against him. He might have a family at home just like his dad. He didn’t want his dad to die alone so this man wouldn’t either.

  95. Part 10 Question 1: Michael Holtzaphel killed himself because he couldn’t get over the fact that his mother was willing to die and he wasn’t. His mother was going to just take death so easily. He hated that he was selfish. He hated that he wasn’t ready. He hated that he just left his own mother to die by herself. He hated himself. Michael had gone through a lot (fighting in the war, watching his brother die, etc.) and he just couldn’t take it anymore. I don’t think the fact that he didn’t want die is what made him kill himself. I think it was the fact that pushed him over the edge.

I would recommend other people to read this book because it helps people to realize what really happened and that actual people just like them had to go through it. 98. Part 10 Question 2:
When I read the part about the last bombing in Molching, it really shocked me. It was a sudden ending and I never expected that to happen. The narrator also described everything dramatically, so it made me sad when I thought of how it would feel to have that happen to me. Also, I felt sorry for Liesel. I think the part of this scene that impacted me the most was the way Liesel acted when she saw all the bodies. She was insane and desperate, and it really made me think about what it would be like to be in her shoes.

    Part 10 Question 5:
Overall, I liked The Book Thief. I liked how it showed us what it was like to be living in Nazi Germany, and I liked how it gave us a picture of how terrible the Holocaust was. I also kind of liked how the narrator was really mysterious about some things and use a lot of foreshadowing until he got to the very end. It got confusing sometimes, but it made the story more interesting. The story changed the way I think about people a little bit. It showed that even in the worst situations, there are good people (like how Liesel and the Hubermanns resisted the Nazis in the story). It also showed me how horrible the Holocaust was for everyone, not just the Jews. Most importantly, it helped me understand why we have to remember history. I think it was a good book.

  99. Part 10-
    Question #2:

I thought that the last bombing in Molching happened really quickly and I didn’t see it coming. I thought that this was very devastating and it showed me how much of an impact war has on people because I’ve never really been through something like that and it was just scary to put myself in the victims’ shoes. This part of the story probably made me feel the most sympathetic I have felt throughout this whole story because the people in Molching didn’t really have any way to defend themselves and they were kind of helpless. I think the fact that people were just being attacked and had no defense system impacted me most because I hate the feeling of being helpless but these people were being killed for no reason; I don’t know how that feels. Just thinking about being in that situation and knowing that it’s either life or death, scares me.

  100. Part 10-
    Question #5:

Yes, I liked the story. I really liked the fact that the author made it seem like it was coming from someone’s point of view that was actually in the Holocaust. Even though it was fictional, the author made the narrator true to life and he actually used true facts, events, and consequences that actually happened in the Holocaust. I also liked the fact that the narrator wasn’t a person, it was death. It gave a different intake of the story because you get an omniscient look on the story and you didn’t just get one opinion. But, sometimes the story was really slow or hard to understand because of lack of detail so it made the story hard to read. This story definitely changed the way I look at history and other people. It makes me feel like the Holocaust is something important to remember and it really scares me. I used to not fully understand it and I didn’t really know what to think of it but now, I know how horrific and devastating it actually was. It makes me angry that people would even think about killing innocent people because of their characteristics. It makes me not want to be quick to judge people or talk badly about someone for the way they dress, look, etc. The story changed my point of view on life in a significant way.

  104. Part 10 Question 2: The bombing in Molching completely shocked me. It was out of the blue and unexpected. This was definitely the part in the book that affected me the most because it showed me how anyone could’ve suffered in the Holocaust, even Germans like Liesel. She wasn’t even being discriminated against, but she still lost her entire family and her best friend Rudy. The parts in the scene that affected me the most would have to be when Liesel was by Rudy’s body and by Hans’s body. She and Rudy had been best friends for years, and she never got the chance to say that she loved him until it was too late. Also, when she’s next to Hans’s body, she tells him all the things that he did for her. Like teaching her how to read, and playing the accordion for her.

  105. Part 10 Question 5: I loved this story. I pretty much liked it the entire way through, but the ending was very shocking and sad. This gave me a whole new perspective on the Holocaust, just how horribly the Jews were treated. I always knew they were treated bad, but not this bad. For example, during the two death marches, the Jews are forced to keep marching, and if they stop for even a second, they get whipped and sometimes left to die in the street. What surprised me more was that the German citizens can just stand and watch this happen without taking action. That’s why I really liked when Hans was brave enough to give an old man in the march a piece of bread. He’s an example of how there’s still some good in the world, no matter what the situation is.
